The structural ceramics includes the production of tile, brick, small vault and stoneware products for construction and rustic pavement.

It is represented by 150 companies located all over the country but with special prevalence in the districts of Aveiro, Leiria and Lisbon.

Due to the nature of manufactured products, especially because of the transportation costs´ effect, the external trade assumes little signification in this national ceramic segment.

At the technological level, this sub-sector is reacting most favourably to modernization demands, specifically recent elevated investments for a total modernization of the productive process, superior specialization of the companies and increase manpower qualification.

The evolution of this sub-sector will be determinated essentially by the increasing of the rates in the construction activity, namely in the building of new dwelling houses.

More than half of national production of tile is obtained by certified companies.
