ADDITIVE OPTIMISATION FOR IMPROVED CERAMICS
A European Project supported within the Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development
Supported by the EC, the Adoptic project addresses the activity area
“Horizontal Research Activities involving SMEs – Collective Research”.
The project runs from 1st September 2006 and will last for 36 months.
A European Collective Research project supported through the Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development.
CONTEXT & POTENTIAL IMPACTS
The correct use of synthetic and organic Additives in ceramic manufacturing has a profound beneficial effect on process and product performance. The ADOPTIC project will provide comprehensive information and support via the web for SME manufacturers seeking to broaden their knowledge and use of Additives.
The project will address critical ceramic producer questions including:
• How can I improve my understanding of the benefits of additives for my processes and products?
• How can I optimise production yields and reduce defects through
good quality control?
• Are the additives I use appropriate, and what options are available
if my established supply fails?
Ceramic manufacturing employs some 240,000 people in Europe. It is estimated that 90% of ceramic companies are ‘Small to Medium Enterprises’ (SME’s) with fewer than 250 employees. It is vital for these enterprises to continually improve their manufacturing efficiency and product quality in order to retain a secure position in the global ceramic markets. A good knowledge of the use of additives and related quality regimes will help smaller companies to improve competitiveness and grow.
In working with additives suppliers smaller ceramic producers face a number of challenges:
• Additives suppliers serve a wide range of industrial sectors of which ceramics is not the largest. Small ceramic businesses may be a low priority for effective additive supply and development.
• Relatively low consumption of additives in the ceramic industries may lead to a risk of marginal materials being withdrawn from the market. The proposed REACH directive may compound the situation.
• Basic information about the ‘science’ of additives materials and operational use can be difficult for busy SME’s to readily access and benefit from.
One of the key outputs of the project will be a web-based knowledge system which will enable SME producers to identify the benefits of additives for their sector, product, production process, or manufacturing problem and to identify ways to improve yield, quality, processing costs and product performance.
The system will provide several points of access including: Industry sector, fault type, manufacturing method and additive type.
.................................................PROJECT OBJECTIVES....................................
- To collate baseline information for SME manufacturing routes, quality tests and process faults
- To develop quality control tests which enable full evaluation of additives
- Create and evaluate a ‘user-friendly’ web based Knowledge System
- Help resolve specific additive related issues raised by the SME partners
PROJECT PARTNER ROLES
- Industry Association Groupings (IAGs):
Owners of IPR resulting from the project and responsible for creating a clear dissemination and exploitation plan to assist SMEs.
- Research & Technology Development performers (RTDs):
Responsible for delivering the R&D as well as training SMEs / IAGs in the use of the web-based knowledge system, new rheology protocols etc. and supporting SME factory trialling of new additives.
- Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
To guide RTDs in the development of the web-based knowledge system and rheology tests / protocols. To further provide feedback on the quality of the web-based knowledge system and the success in identifying additives to solve specific factory problems
Consortium
The Adoptic consortium is made up of 25 partners from 4 EU states (Portugal, Reino Unido, Polónia e Itália) . The 25 partners comprise 15 SME partners (representing ceramic suppliers and producers), 5 IAGs and 5 RTD performers.
